Last Week's Program:

Biff Averitt. Rusty Turner led the singing “My Wild Irish Rose”.
Dick Trammel introduced today's guest speaker, Trish Quei,
County Extension Agent for Urban Stormwater Education, who
presented a program on Stormwater Pollution. There are only 6
urban water educators in the whole state of Arkansas. Trish has
been with the County Extension office for a little less than a
year.
What is stormwater? Anything that falls. Stormwater is water
that originates during precipitation events. It may also be used
to apply to water that originates with runoff water from over
watering that enters the stormwater system. Stormwater that does
not soak into the ground becomes surface runoff, which either
flows into surface waterways or is channeled into storm sewers.
Impervious surfaces create runoff that flows untreated through
storm drains to surface waters. This water does not go through a
treatment plant. It is up to us to see that potential pollutants
do not enter the storm drains from the start.
Congress passed the Phase III Stormwater Program as part of the
EPA Cleanup Act. These regulations require stormwater management
plans that address 6 different measures. The Cooperative
Extension Service, the public education branch of the University
of Arkansas, helps communities by providing 3 of the measures
including public education, involvement and trainings.
Stormwater is of concern for two main issues: one is related to
the volume and timing of runoff water (flood control and water
supplies) and the other related to potential contaminants that
the water is carrying, i.e. water pollution.
Some things that we as citizens can do to help:
-
Wash you car
on the lawn, or better yet take it to a car wash – the
drainage from car washes is ran through a treatment plant
-
Sweep grass
clippings and leaves back into your yards – keeps it out of
the stormdrains and also helps mulch your yard.
-
Watch the
amount of fertilizers used on lawns.
