Today's
Program: Trish Ouei, Urban Storm Water Educator with the U
of A, Benton County Extension Service, will present a program on
"Storm Water Run Off".
Last Week's Program:
President, Jonathan Moore, led the Club with singing “America "
and saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Invocation by Biff Averitt.
Due to the fact that we have a long program, we will forego the
singing this week.
Dick Trammel introduced Bob Kelly, volunteer coach of Odyssey of
the Mind Team from St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School. The
Sixth and Seventh Grade Odyssey of the Mind Team made their
award winning presentations to our club. There are four 6th
graders and three 7th graders participating on the team. The
team members are: Jack Barry, Alex Beauchamp, Shelby Cook,
Garrett Kelly, Kassandra Salazar, Hannah Owen, and Patrick
Brophy.
The team has 5 problems that they can choose from and have to
pick one and solve it during the course of the year. There are
three phases to the competition: Create a question, solve it and
then create a fad. They must complete their presentation in 8
minutes or less. Parents and teachers can’t help - they can
advise and ask leading questions only. The team has to build
their own set, design their own custom and create the
presentation. They are currently 3rd in the Region and 2nd in
the State. The team heads out to Washington D.C. this weekend
for the world finals in which 61 teams will be competing. The
teams participating are from 26 states and 7 countries. We wish
them Good Luck!
Wendy Kumpe gave the Club a report on Rotary's Wheelchair
Project in Costa Rica. The donations totaled $8,345, equating to
111.26 wheelchairs. There were 15 Gold sponsors (2 wheelchairs)
and 56 Silver sponsors (1 wheelchair) from our Club. The Club
was a Diamond sponsor (20 wheelchairs). The two Rotary
deliveries in Costa Rica were for 110 wheelchairs with an
additional 90 being delivered to individuals too infirm to leave
their homes. They gave away 90 wheelchairs on the 1st day, 86 in
less than one hour. On the second day they gave the rest away in
a nursing home. The attended a rotary meeting while there, they
meet at 9:00 pm.
Wendy talked about Costa Rica, the people and the scenery and
showed a slide show from their trip. Costa Rica has no army,
they use the money instead for conservation. Tourism, the Intel
Plant and pineapple and flower exports are their main income for
the country. It is an impoverished country with most Costa
Ricans make an average of $200-$300 a week. Chad talked about
his experience with a man that he helped give a wheelchair to
and how he was so happy that he just kept squeezing Chad’s arm
and saying “Gracias, Gracias, Gracias” over and over. Noel
Harris, from the Springdale Club, presented Wendy and Chad with
a crystal with a wheelchair etched into it for their
participation in the Wheelchair Foundation.
It was reported that our very own Hal Savage was the first one
to go on the zip line through the jungle. He went about a mile
through the jungle and said that it was really not that scary
and he had a lot of fun.
